Overview

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main is a national-level entrance test. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Students need to qualify this exam to get admission into undergraduate engineering programs (B.E./B.Tech) at NITs, IIITs, and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) across India. It also serves as a qualifying exam for the JEE Advanced, the gateway to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

For Indian Candidates:

  • General/OBC/EWS (Male): ₹1,000 (Single Paper), ₹2,000 (Both Papers)
  • General/OBC/EWS (Female): ₹800 (Single Paper), ₹1,600 (Both Papers)
  • SC/ST/PwD/Transgender: ₹500 (Single Paper), ₹1,000 (Both Papers)

For Foreign Candidates:

  • Male: ₹5,000 (Single Paper), ₹10,000 (Both Papers)
  • Female: ₹4,000 (Single Paper), ₹8,000 (Both Papers)

Online Payment Only via:

  • Credit Card/Debit Card (Visa/MasterCard/RuPay)
  • Net Banking (All major banks)
  • UPI Payment

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed the 10+2 examination or equivalent in 2024 or 2025, or be appearing in 2026, with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biology/Technical Vocational subjects.
  • Age Limit: No age limit; however, candidates must meet the age criteria of the institutes to which they seek admission.

Mode of Exam

Computer-Based Test (CBT) for all papers except the Drawing Test in Paper 2A, which is Pen and Paper-based.

Medium of Exam

Available in 13 languages (English, Hindi, regional languages)

Duration of Exam

3 hours for each paper

Exam Pattern

Paper 1: B.E./B.Tech (Engineering Courses)

  • Mode: Computer-Based Test (CBT)
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics
  • Total Questions: 90 (Only 75 need to be answered)
  • Total Marks: 300

Question Distribution:

  • Mathematics: 20 MCQs + 10 Numerical (Answer any 5) = 25 questions (100 marks)
  • Physics: 20 MCQs + 10 Numerical (Answer any 5) = 25 questions (100 marks)
  • Chemistry: 20 MCQs + 10 Numerical (Answer any 5) = 25 questions (100 marks)

Marking Scheme:

  • (+4) marks for correct answers
  • (-1) mark for incorrect MCQs
  • No negative marking for numerical questions

Paper 2A: B.Arch (Architecture Courses)

  • Mode: Partially CBT (Drawing section is Pen-and-Paper)
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Subjects: Mathematics, Aptitude, Drawing
  • Total Questions: 82
  • Total Marks: 400

Question Distribution:

  • Mathematics: 20 MCQs + 10 Numerical (Answer any 5) = 25 questions (100 marks)
  • Aptitude: 50 MCQs (200 marks)
  • Drawing: 2 Questions (100 marks)

Marking Scheme:

  • (+4) marks for correct answers
  • (-1) mark for incorrect MCQs
  • No negative marking for numerical & drawing questions

 

Paper 2B: B.Planning (Planning Courses)

  • Mode: Computer-Based Test (CBT)
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Subjects: Mathematics, Aptitude, Planning-Based Questions
  • Total Questions: 105
  • Total Marks: 400

Question Distribution:

  • Mathematics: 20 MCQs + 10 Numerical (Answer any 5) = 25 questions (100 marks)
  • Aptitude: 50 MCQs (200 marks)
  • Planning: 25 MCQs (100 marks)

Marking Scheme:

  • (+4) marks for correct answers
  • ( -1) mark for incorrect MCQs
  • No negative marking for numerical questions

The syllabus covers topics from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics based on the NCERT curriculum of classes 11 and 12.

Counselling and Admission

The counselling and admission process for JEE Main is conducted through JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs and CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) for special rounds.

Step-by-Step Counselling & Admission Process:

Step 1: Registration

  • Visit josaa.nic.in
  • Register using JEE Main Application Number & Password

 

Step 2: Choice Filling & Locking

  • Select preferred colleges & courses based on rank
  • Lock choices before the deadline

 

Step 3: Seat Allocation (Multiple Rounds)

  • Seats allotted based on rank, category, and seat availability
  • Mock allotment is done before final locking

 

Step 4: Seat Acceptance & Fee Payment

  • Pay the seat acceptance fee online:
    • Gen/OBC/EWS: ₹35,000
    • SC/ST/PwD: ₹15,000
  • Download provisional allotment letter

 

Step 5: Document Verification

  • Upload required documents online or report to Reporting Centres (RCs)

 

Step 6: Reporting to Allotted Institute

  • After final allotment, report to the college for admission formalities
  • Pay the remaining fees and confirm admission

 

Step 7: CSAB Special Rounds (If Seats Remain Vacant)

  • Conducted after JoSAA rounds for vacant seats
  • Same registration and allotment process
