The Supreme Court has granted a one-time additional attempt for the JEE Advanced 2025 to candidates who cleared their board exams in 2023 and withdrew from their academic programs between November 5 and November 18, 2024.
This decision follows a series of changes made by the Joint Admission Board (JAB) regarding the number of permitted attempts:
Initial Announcement:
The JAB initially announced that candidates would be allowed three attempts for JEE Advanced 2025, a move welcomed by many students.
Subsequent Reversal:
Just a week later, JAB reversed its decision and reinstated the two-attempt limit, sparking confusion and concern among aspirants.
Supreme Court Intervention:
The Court ruled that students who had dropped out during the specified November 2024 window could retain eligibility for a third attempt. This was in line with the original notification and aimed at safeguarding students who had made academic decisions based on that earlier guideline.
Reasoning Behind the Ruling:
The Court found JAB’s withdrawal of the three-attempt rule arbitrary, concluding that it unfairly impacted students who relied on the initial announcement when making their decisions.
Limited Scope of Relief:
The extra attempt applies only to those students who exited their courses between November 5 and 18, 2024. All other candidates will remain subject to the two-attempt limit.
One-Time Exception:
The Supreme Court emphasized that this relief is a one-time measure, tailored to address the specific and exceptional circumstances faced by this group of students.
