In a significant move to encourage talented students to pursue postgraduate studies, Anna University has announced plans to introduce a new scholarship scheme beginning in the 2026–27 academic year. The initiative aims to attract high-performing students to the university’s postgraduate engineering and architecture programs and strengthen academic standards.
According to university officials, the scholarship will be offered to students enrolling in postgraduate courses such as M.E., M.Tech, M.Arch, and M.Plan. Under the proposed scheme, selected students will receive ₹60,000 per semester for two years, providing financial support throughout the duration of their postgraduate studies. The university plans to award scholarships to around 400 students each year, ensuring that meritorious candidates receive encouragement and assistance.
The scholarship will be awarded based on the CEETA-PG entrance examination, which is conducted for admission to postgraduate engineering programs in Tamil Nadu. Students securing top ranks in the exam will be eligible for the financial support. Officials stated that the scholarship amount has been designed to match the level of assistance offered under the GATE scholarship scheme, which provides a monthly stipend to postgraduate engineering students.
University authorities explained that the new initiative is intended to address a challenge faced by the institution in recent years. Despite having around 1,100 postgraduate seats across its campuses, several programs have struggled to attract enough high-quality applicants. By offering financial incentives, the university hopes to encourage more talented graduates to choose its postgraduate programs instead of other institutions.
If implemented successfully, the program could also increase research activity and academic competitiveness within the university. Officials believe the scholarship will motivate students to pursue advanced studies and contribute to innovation and technological development. Additionally, authorities expect that similar scholarship schemes could be introduced in government engineering colleges in the future.
Education experts have welcomed the decision, stating that financial support often plays a crucial role in encouraging students to pursue higher education. With this scholarship initiative, Anna University hopes to strengthen its postgraduate programs and attract some of the best engineering and architecture graduates from across the country.
